There was no such thing as police PTSD when I was retired in 1997 - my certificate says "severe stress-related depressive illness" - but, according to my ex-colleagues, that was just medico talk for "tosser". I got no help or support during the 3 years on and off when I was on extended periods of sick leave - when I tried to go back to work I got pissed all over by everyone (no exceptions) and, after retirement, the only contact I had with my "old friends" was when they harrassed me - I had to move away from the area the following year. I was more ill after retirement than before and, having lived and breathed the job, I came to hate it and everyone in it. This year marked 20 years since my retirement and I still have a panic attack whenever I encounter police or CPSOs - fortunately, they hardly bother to come to my town anymore - too busy apparently (pissing off motorists).
